Pea gravel quantities
Pea gravel is small, rounded stone. The volume math is the same as for any gravel: length x width x depth. The weight differs a little. This calculator uses about 1.35 tons per cubic yard for pea gravel, and you can change it. A path 3 ft wide and 30 ft long at 3 inches deep, with 10% extra, needs 0.92 cubic yards, or 1.24 tons.
| Area | Depth | Cubic yards | Tons |
|---|---|---|---|
| 10 x 10 ft | 2 in | 0.68 | 0.92 |
| 10 x 10 ft | 3 in | 1.02 | 1.38 |
| 10 x 20 ft | 3 in | 2.04 | 2.75 |
| 12 x 50 ft | 4 in | 8.15 | 11.00 |
| 12 x 100 ft | 4 in | 16.30 | 22.00 |
| 12 x 100 ft | 6 in | 24.44 | 33.00 |
Common uses
- Garden paths and patios, often 2 to 3 inches deep.
- Play areas, where the depth recommended for the product matters. Follow the manufacturer's guidance.
- Around pipes and in drainage trenches.
Rounded stone shifts underfoot, so edging helps keep it in place. Landscape fabric underneath slows weeds. For other stone, use the gravel calculator.
