How many bags of concrete in a yard
A cubic yard is about 45 bags of 80 lb concrete mix. Here is the math for every common bag size.
Bags per cubic yard
One cubic yard is 27 cubic feet. Divide that by what a bag yields. An 80 lb bag yields about 0.6 cubic feet, so 27 / 0.6 = 45 bags. The yields come from the Quikrete data sheet.
| Bag size | Yield per bag | Bags per cubic yard | Bags per cubic yard, with 10% extra |
|---|---|---|---|
| 80 lb bag | 0.6 cu ft | 45 | 50 |
| 60 lb bag | 0.45 cu ft | 60 | 66 |
| 50 lb bag | 0.375 cu ft | 72 | 80 |
| 40 lb bag | 0.3 cu ft | 90 | 99 |
How much does that weigh?
45 bags of 80 lb mix is 3,600 lb before water. The weight is worth planning for if you are moving the bags yourself. A ready-mix truck is the better fit once a job is a few yards.
Using the number
Use the calculator above for your own measurements. It converts the volume into bags and adds extra for waste. For the slab formula, see the concrete slab calculator.
